Elizabeth Tarrant  -  Artist Statement

The purpose of my work is to communicate beauty and ‘presence’. Landscapes speak to me because of their beauty and their ability to transport a person into another realm of peace, tranquility and unity with the universe. The work parallels my own personal spiritual journey.

In terms of my technique I’ve allowed the mark making to be loose, uncontrolled by my rational self/ego, in effect channeling the art directly to the canvas. I facilitate this by use of a dowel extender to the brush and painting at about a meter away from the work. The textural effect mimics the natural and metaphorical processes that are life itself, which is, essentially unknowable.

This show references a series of photos I shot in December on a full moon evening along the Yarra River. I choose this material for several reasons: the energy, the mystery, the need to ‘see’ into and intuit the source images.
